Lets take price of 1st shirt= $x & 2nd shirt= $y
Therefore, price of 1st shirt
= 80% off $x
= 1- {80% off $x}
= 20% of x
Therefore, price of 2nd shirt
= 70% off $y
= 1- {70% off $y}
= 30% of y
price of both shirts = 20% of x + 30% of y
Lets take x= $100 and y= $150
(a)= total percent discount offered
= (price of both shirts/ total costs) *100
= (20% of $100 + 30% of $150 / $100+$150) *100
= ($20+$45 / $250) *100
= 65/250 *100
= 26%
(b)= 30%
Therefore, B is greater.

I think, Your approach is wrong Marked price-selling price=discount price
We can apply the same here, for percent as well,
Its clearly mentioned in the question another shirt for another marked price.
Mp(shirt 1)-0.80Mp(shirt 1)=0.20 Mp(shirt 1)
Mp(Shirt 2)-0.70Mp(shirt 2)=0.30 Mp(shirt2)
Here we cannot form a relationship at all to find the total discount% since we do not know about the MP of shirts one and two and relationships between them.
Hence the answer should be D.
