In the preceding diagram of circle C, chord \(\overline{XY}\) intersects chord \(\overline{UV}\) at W. XW = z + 12, UW = z + 3, WV = z, and WY = 3. What is the length of \(\overline{XY}\)?

For the given circle with 2 chords intersecting, the formula is \(XW * WY = UW * WV\)
XW = z + 12, UW = z + 3, WV = z, WY = 3
(z + 12) * 3 = (z + 3) * z
\(3z + 36 = z^2 + 3z\)
\(z^2 = 36\)
\(z = 6\)
\(XY = XW + WY = 18 + 3 = 21\)
Answer 21
XW = z + 12, UW = z + 3, WV = z, WY = 3
(z + 12) * 3 = (z + 3) * z
\(3z + 36 = z^2 + 3z\)
\(z^2 = 36\)
\(z = 6\)
\(XY = XW + WY = 18 + 3 = 21\)
Answer 21
