He rarely bothered to revise/make changes in his lengthy tomes, but their surprising popularity with the public empowered him to avoid editorial complaints through abrupt or peremptory threats to sign a contract with a different publisher. Revise or make changes is to emend, so fits in the first blank.

Allay means to reduce or lessen something.
Edify is to teach or instruct.
Impuissant means ineffective or powerless and toothsome is related to tempting taste and attractiveness.

Tough question. Frankly speaking.........

In essence the meaning is the following

He wrote books (novels, fiction.........I do not know)and published them

However, he did not bother to amend or review them because they were too big.

But the same books had great popularity with the public, and this permitted him to avoid disagreements and menaces to rescind the contract.
