means that the historians assume that certain motivations are the real reasons why immigrants moved in New England.

But, eventually, at a closer look, the reasons were different.

Hope this helps.

Hi!
Two questions/suggestions :
1. How do we know if multiple options are right in question 1 or just one answer? Maybe we can tag or write some description
2. You can 77% of people dis this right so definitely not a medium difficulty question, maybe we can mark it easy?

This passage is in both The Big Book and the new guides. What you are seeing above is from the new material. The old one has one extra question, but the types of questions are different.

for 23 C option C if the statement had been They were LESS likely than the average immigrant to be motivated by material considerations. would this have been a correct statement to infer that Cressy would agree with the statement about the organizers among the English immigrants to New England in the 1630s?

23. The passage indicates that Cressy would agree with which of the following statements about the organizers among the English immigrants to New Englandì in the 1630s?

(A) Some of them offered a religious explanation for their immigration.

Yes.

With respect to their reasons for immigrating, Cressy does not deny the frequently noted fact that some of the immigrants of the 1630s, most notably the organizers and clergy, advanced religious explanations for departure, but he finds that such explanations usually assumed primacy only in retrospect. When he moves beyond the principal actors, he finds that religious explanations were less frequently offered, and
he concludes that most people immigrated because they were recruited by promises of material improvement.

(B) They did not offer any reasons for their immigration until some time after they had immigrated.

No. David Cressy and not the immigrants finds that the religious explanation assumed primacy only in retrospect.

(C) They were more likely than the average immigrant to be motivated by material considerations.

No evidence for the same in the paragraph.

24. Select the sentence that provides Cressy’s opinion about what motivated English immigrants to go to New England in the 1630s.

When he moves beyond the principal actors, he finds that religious explanations were less frequently offered, and he concludes that most people immigrated because they were recruited by promises of material improvement.

25. In the passage, the author is primarily concerned with

(A) summarizing the findings of an investigation

Yes.

He summarizes the findings of an investigation by David Cressy. This can be gleaned from the following lines.

In a recent study, David Cressy examines two central questions concerning English immigration to New England in the 1630s: what kinds of people immigrated and why?

With respect to their reasons for immigrating, Cressy does not deny the frequently noted fact that some of the immigrants of the 1630s, most notably the organizers and clergy, advanced religious explanations for departure, but he finds that such explanations usually assumed primacy only in retrospect.

When he moves beyond the principal actors, he finds that religious explanations were less frequently offered, and he concludes that most people immigrated because they were recruited by promises of material improvement.

(B) analyzing a method of argument

No method of argument is analyzed.

(C) evaluating a point of view

No point of view is being evaluated.

(D) hypothesizing about a set of circumstances

No hypothesizing may be found in the passage.

(E) establishing categories

No categories are being established in the passage.

I don't think so because

With respect to their reasons for immigrating, Cressy does not deny the frequently noted fact that some of the immigrants of the 1630s, most notably the organizers and clergy, advanced religious explanations for departure, but he finds that such explanations usually assumed primacy only in retrospect.

The highlighted words in fact throw doubt on the reasons given by the organizers themselves for immigration.

Also, what do you mean by an "average immigrant"?

What does "primacy in retrospect" mean?

it means "importance in hindsight, when looking back from the present"
