The key is in this portion of the sentence

medieval thinkers to explain the workings of the universe has led some critics to question

which means that the medieval thinkers were sure about certain facts of the universe but they had difficulties explaining to their contemporaries.

Therefore they have the inability or I.E they were not able to explain why even though they were correct
