Re: In a company, the number of non-technical employees are one fourth the [#permalink]

Yes but it is cumbersome

NT=x
T=y

x=y/4

4x=y

X is increased by 20% and y is decreased by 25%

4*1.2 x=y*0.75

4.8x=0.75y

0.75/4.8=75/480=5/2^3 which is basically 5/2

Way better to pick concrete numbers

Re: In a company, the number of non-technical employees are one fourth the [#permalink]
I don't understand how people are giving 5/2 as a reply could someone prove me wrong because i have solved this question about 10 times for last 30 minutes and I'm getting the answer as 5/32
Let non technical be x and technical be y
now x = 1.2,
y = .75
now as given x = 1/4 y
AND NOW WE SUBSTITUTE THE VALUES TO GET NEW RATIO OF X:Y
4.80x = .75y
480x=75y
x/y = 75/480
x/y = 15/96
x/y = 5/32
NOW COULD SOMEONE EXPLAIN ME HOW IS THE OFFICIAL ANSWER 5/2?

If number of non-technical employees =N And number of technical employees =T

It is given that N=T/4

T=4N

Number of non-technical employees increased by 20%. So they are the 120%

Number of technical employees decreased by 25% So they are the 75%

Ratio of technical and non-technical employees in the company

75*T/120*N=75*4N/120*N

300N/120N=5/2

I hope now is clear

PS: notice how for simplicity in the solved fraction above 75 stands for 75% and 120 for 120%

I understand it now, i have a solution too if it can help someone:
as it is given NT = T/4 we can rewrite this as T/NT = 4/1
now multiply the increase and decrease percent with numbers
T/NT = (4*.75)/(1*1.20)
T/NT = (4*75)/(120)
T/NT = 5/2
