In the coordinate plane, a line crosses the x-axis at values of x that return a y value of o. These points are known as the “roots” of the equation. To find the roots of the equation y = x^3 - x^2 - 6x, set y = 0 and factor the right side of the equation as follows:
0 = x^3-x^2-6 x
0 = x(x^2 - x - 6)
0 = x(x + 2) (x - 3)
Hence, y = 0 when x = 0, - 2, or 3. Only choice (C) matches one of these roots.
