After the splendid outburst of painting in the first half of the fourt [#permalink]

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION QUESTION #3

D is correct. The author distinguishes the two periods by noting that Medieval period painters had not mastered the technical skills necessary for complicated works, implying that Revival artists had done so. A is incorrect. The author does not compare the depiction of culture between the two periods. B is incorrect. The author does imply greater complexity of the Revival works but not an overall superiority. The passage states that while Revival culture existed in Italy during the 14th Century, it had not yet had enough influence for painters to express it. The same sentence states that the painters had not yet developed the technical skills necessary for more complex paintings. This implies that a comparative complexity of beauty was a feature of the later Revival period. The author does not assert or imply an aesthetic superiority between the two. C is incorrect. The lull described is a lull in "splendid" painting. A literal cessation of painting is unlikely and not justified by the passage. E is incorrect. The passage states simply that painters of the period had not yet mastered a complex style, not that they were uninterested in doing so.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION QUESTION #4

$\(\mathrm{A}, \mathrm{B}\)$ and \(C\) are correct. The passage states that Revival culture had not had enough influence on artists for them to have the ability to express it. It also states emphatically that the culture and perspective of Italy's Medieval period had been expressed thoroughly by artists, suggesting little further could be expressed. And finally, the passage notes that the artists of the early 14th century had not yet developed the technical skills necessary to create complex works. By noting the half-century gap before the commencement of the next period, the passage implies that the skillset took that long to develop.
