P(A)=x
P(complement of A)=y

but P(complement of A)=1-P(A)=1-x
so
1-x=y

also y>3x
therefore 1-x>3x
1>4x
x<1/4
since 1/4=.25 and 1/5=.2
x can be .23 and therefore we have choice A
x can be .15 and therefore we have choice B

Final answer is choice D

Given that P(A)= x and p(A not occurring)= y
And x+y = 1
And y>3x
Asking what is bigger? x or 1/5
If we assume that x= 1/5=0.2, then y=0.8 (1-0.2)
it seems that x can be equal to 1/5. Quantity A = Quantity B
However, there are other possibilities that can meet the conditions above. x+y=1 and y>3x
x=0.22 and y= 0.88
x=0.15 and y=0.85
x=0.10 and y=0.90
answer is D

Hi,

The thought process that I had while solving this questions is as y>3x i.e x<1/4 why because if x=1/4 then, y=3/4 and then when we multiply x by 3 we get x=3/4 i.e. x=y and we want y>3x thus any value below 1/4 including 1/5,1/6, 1/7 etc. can be the value of x.

Thus the answer is D

Hope this helps!

x+y = 1
y = 1 - x
1 - x > 3x
Thus compare it with x= 1/4, x= 1/5, x=1/6
for x=1/4, 3/4 = 3/4
for x=1/5, 4/5>3/5
for x=1/6, 5/6>3/6
Thus since x=1/5 or x=1/6 satisfies the given inequality, answer is D.

probability of an event NOT happening= 1- x
here y=1-x
and y>3x
1-x>3x
1>4x
x<1/4
1/4= 25 and 1/5=20
x<25
it could be 24, 23,20,19 so D
