Number lines are drawn to scale on the GRE, which Carcass - could you comment? This would make the answer choice D

Not aure I complete got you meant sir

However. on a number line, such as in this case, The only sure thing is that x is on the negative side and y on the positive side. This is all we do know

Then x could be close to zero and y far away from 0, We do not know.,

It all depends on the question itself , though

What I am saying is that the ETS Math guide states number lines must be drawn to scale (I cannot attach link yet, but here is the search for Google) pdfs/gre/gre-math-conventions.pdf on the GRE.

So, x and y would need to be opposite values of one another. So if X were -1, Y would need to be 1.

This would make the answer D.

Could you confirm?

I believe you are making a lot of confusion between what is the meaning of "drawn to scale of a number line or a geometry figure or an xy-plane and the question itself

Now, the concept of drawing to scale is

Quote:
The distances between the numbers are proportional to their actual values.

For example, if the distance between 0 and 1 is 1 centimeter, then the distance between 1 and 2 should also be 1 centimeter.
The spacing between the numbers is consistent.

This ensures that the number line accurately represents the relationships between the values.

In other words, when on the GRE we have "drawn to scale " this means that we have proportions that are constant

Quote:
a number line drawn to scale maintains the correct proportions and spacing between numbers, making it a reliable tool for mathematical analysis.

On the other hand, we do not know ANYTHING about x and y in the question above: y can be on the number line or one trillion and x alike.

BUT if x is -1, y MIGHT NOT BE +1

I hope now is clear

Thanks - trying to make sure I fully understand this.

ETS States that "Geometric figures, such as lines, circles, triangles, and quadrilaterals, are not necessarily drawn to scale. Don’t assume quantities such as lengths and angle measures are as they appear in a figure. You should assume, however, that: lines shown as straight are actually straight points on a line are in the order shown all geometric objects are in the relative positions shown. For questions with geometric figures, you should base your answers on geometric reasoning, not on estimating or comparing quantities by sight or by measurement.

The following are drawn to scale. You can read, estimate or compare quantities and data values by sight or by measurement:
1. Coordinate systems, such as xy-planes and number lines
2. graphical data presentations such as bar graphs, circle graphs and line graphs"

So when I read this, to me it implies that I can rely on the visual to estimate the size..... maybe I am still confused but do you understand what I am asking?

yes and I also saw that millions of time in the ETS pdf

It is true that when some figure drawn the scale you can rely on a degree of estimation , that does not mean x and y are equally distant.

Look also this question discussed on gmatclub. Nobody even thinks about scale or not.

Just because it has small sense

FAQ: Why is Statement I not correct?

The key phrasing in this questions is "which of the following statements MUST be true." Must be true means that the statement can never be false.
If x = -9 and y = 1, then statement 1 would be false. Since we have numbers that can make statement 1 false, it does not satisfy the "MUST be true" condition.

FAQ: I thought that the bars around the x and y on answer choice I meant absolute value? As in the number of places from the number line?

Those bars most certainly do mean absolute value; however, it's important to realize that you perform the operation inside the brackets before you take the absolute value. I'll give some possibilities for x and y:
In this case it works. Let's try a different set:
x = -10
y = 3
|x + y| < y
|-10 + 3| < 3
|-7| < 3
7 < 3
