if he is anti-social or didn't really want to get along with people in the first place, what is it to be surprised if he being rude.
Wouldn't A,E make more sense that he would be easy going (A) and appealing (E) even if he is anti-social

I totally agree with you.

The OA's are correct in theory, but they do not have any sense in the sentence above.

The meaning is the following

usually the author was rude but this time was kind, or simpatico, or nice.

A and E should be the answers.

Princeton is not always a champ in good questions or even less with good answers
