Re: The letters C, I, R, C, L, and E can be used to form 6-lette [#permalink]

Fun alternative solution:

There are 6 choose 2 ways to arrange the 2 C's in the 6-letter string, 5 of which the C's are next to each other. Therefore, there are 10 ways to arrange the 2 C's in the 6-letter string such that they are *not* next to each other. Thus, we are left to arrange the 4 remaining unique letters for each of the 10 arrangements. Since there are 4! ways to arrange the 4 letters, there are a total of 4! * 10 ways to express the 6-letter string such that the 2 C's are not next to each other.

Re: The letters C, I, R, C, L, and E can be used to form 6-lette [#permalink]
Scenario 1: C*4*4*3*2*1 = 96 ways if C is in first spot
Scenario 2: 4*C*3*3*2*1 = 72 ways if C is in second spot
Scenario 3: 1*4*C*3*3*2 = 72 ways if C is in third spot
We can mirror these over the middle to see that there will be
72 ways if C is in the fourth spot
72 ways if C is in the fifth spot
96 ways if C is in the 6th spot
Total = 480
However, since there are 2 C's, we are actually duplicating each possibility. For example, for one of the possibilities where C is in the first spot, it is also in the third spot. So we actually need to divide the calculated value by 2.
Thus the answer is 480/2 = 240

That can be calculated by total ways letters can be arranged - ways in which letter C is not separated

6i/2i - 5i

5x 4 x 3 (6-2)

5x4x4x3

= 240
