GIVEN: 30 percent of x is y. We can write: 0.3x = y
From here, we can use the technique of matching operations
Given: Quantity A: x/y Quantity B: 3
Since we're told that y is POSITIVE, we can safely multiply both quantities by y to get: Quantity A: x Quantity B: 3y
Since we know that 0.3x = y, we can replace y with 0.3x to get: Quantity A: x Quantity B: 3(0.3x)
Simplify to get: Quantity A: x Quantity B: 0.9x
Since we're told that x is POSITIVE, we can safely divide both quantities by x to get: Quantity A: 1 Quantity B: 0.9
