Re: In the industrialized nations, life expectancy has increased to an ave [#permalink]

No because it doe snot fint into the sentence

that most governments may not be able to bear in the long run. The cost of caring for the older citizens is sure to be high

Here the meaning is to sustain in the long run the costs of an aging population I.E. to pay more pensions for a prolonged time. Here the sense is not immortality, but people who live maybe close to one hundred years.

(i) longevity (A) – While "immortality" (B) is a tempting choice, "longevity" (living a long life) is a more realistic and contextually fitting term for increased life expectancy.

I hope this helps

Can the first blank be immortality? the dream of longevity has come true; the sentence mentions "seems to be coming true"...

living just 80 years doesn't get you near to immortal.

Re: In the industrialized nations, life expectancy has increased to an ave [#permalink]
The phrase "luxury of prolonged stay on the planet" and the challenges of caring for the old present throughout the paragraph clearly indicates the correct choice is longevity and not immortality.

The cost of caring for the old is mentioned as being high and it is also mentioned as a burden that most governments take upon themselves though they may not able to bear it in the long run. Therefore the word for the second blank is finance.

Since the last sentence talks about the reality of lower birth rates, and the complex situation that creates, to a situation in the 60s and 70s when the population had more youngsters, the choice for the third blank is demographic patterns.
