OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The blank must cause the interior to be "even more" disappointing to buyers. We can predict that an attractive or impressive facade would make the sight of an unsatisfactory interior greater. Choice (B) is tempting in that dilapidation, or "state of disrepair," can be disappointing to buyers. However, the interior was disappointing, not the state of the facade, which makes it an opposite wrong answer choice. Choice (A) ostentatious is also tempting, but since it means "pretentious or vulgar," it is not a term that would make the house "even more" disappointing. Both choice (D) diminutive ("extremely small") and choice (E) gloomy ("depressing") are decidedly negative when it comes to real estate. A positive term is needed here and choice (C) august, or "impressive," matches.
