Carcass, this has been a constant problem. I'm able to shortlist and get down to 3 close options in SE questions. Usually, 3 answer choices have very close meanings in hard questions. The correct answer invariably comes from knowing the textbook dictionary meaning of the words. Close/near-about meanings just won't cut it. How should I go about this issue ? It's impossible to memorize the textbook meaning of so many words.

Your problem is more common than you think. 80% of the students, mainly non-native language speakers, have.

You cannot fill the gap by memorizing words. they are countless almost.

The only thing you can do is study a great list, such as our vocabulary list: the high frequency words have 90% probability of being seen in the real exam.

Then use logic for the sentence: if a sentence is a definition, a contrast, or with punctuation, and so forth.

No other way
