To readers of V.S. Naipaul--especially those who are familiar with the latter half of his oeuvre--the author's claim that he started off as a comic writer will in itself seem comical - so ______ is the tone of most of his novels.

There is a shift in V.S. Naipaul the early writer and V.S. Naipaul the later writer. That the early Naipaul wanted to be a comic writer because the later Naipul is anything but comic. Words such as depressing/bleak would aptly fit in the blank.
(A) despairing means lacking hope, which fits nicely
(B) acerbic describes wit that is biting. While this answer could potentially work, it is not quite the opposite of comic.
(C) ambivalent means having mixed emotions. While clearly not comic or funny, 'ambivalent' is not as strong as depressing or hopeless
(D) sanguine means cheerful
(E) nuanced means subtle
(F) pessimistic means lacking hope
