No idea how to solve?Why should I consider x+y and x-y

ORIGINALLY the sides of the square have length x
Then we make some changes.

We INCREASE the length of two opposite sides by y units.
So, new length = x + y

We DECREASE the length of two opposite sides by y units.
So, new length = x - y

We now have a rectangle.
The AREA of this rectangle = (x + y)(x - y)
= x^2 - y^2
= E
