I got the B, but why E?

The lamp is used (in the metaphor) as a support for hanging on. This is quite absurd to conceive. The lamp from the roof is made for illumitating the room.not to hold you.

This is a hard one in my opinion.

The word "assailed" mean "to attack violently". Based on that, you can infer this sentence has a negative tone.

"German rival relying on manuscripts "as a drunkard relies on lamp-posts, for support rather than (ii)__________ "."

If you know "assailed" has a negative meaning, then you should try to find a word that gives this sentence a negative meaning too. A lamp-post is a source of light which here is a metaphor for creativity and persuit of knowledge. The word ilumination works well here because it then means that the German rival is not
looking for a source of newfound knowledge or insight in the manuscripts.

For the first blank, if you know assail means to attack, then the only word that fits is invective which basically means "to offend".

Answer B and E

This is one of those really annoying questions that your mind just has to click and see the answer.

1. The part of the sentence that is related to blank (i) is this:

2. The part is negative in tone because of the word “assailed”

3. The blank word has to be negati ve in tone. Only choice B is negative. Hence the word is “invective”
