This is a Princeton question. They mentioned a corner case in the question that remainder must be greater than 0.

The number could be any multiple of 12 right? Like 24, 36? Why have we considered only 12? The remainder could keep changing.

that no could also be any multiple of 12 we cant consider 24 since if v consider it remainder will be zero which ig given in question that it should not be 0

Remainder is 1. If we try with the value of 12. As for others, for instance 120,24,240 provides with remainder as 0

No, because the divisor will always be 12 and the number will always be 3/2 * ANY multiple of 12.
The second part of the equation will therefore not change, no matter what multiple of 12 you plug in.

Hope this kind of helps :-)

EDIT: you may better understand this if you realize that the remainder MUST be a positive number (in this case it'll either be 6 or 0)

You can't pick 24 for the first case (24/12 --> remainder = 0) it works but not for the second case (1.5*12 = 36 but the remainder is not greater than zero).

Explanation

Plug in 12 for the number of people in the office, because the remainder is 0 when 12 is divided by 12. Because \(\frac{3}{2}*12\) is 18, and the remainder when 18 is divided by 12 is 6, choice E must be correct.

I appriciate you for your solution, however I had to start with 24 and hence I took time to reach to the answer, how did you thought of 12 to start with.

Thank You.

When the number of people in an office is divided by 12, the remainder is 0. If \(\frac{3}{2}\) times the number of people in the office is divided by 12, and the remainder resulting from this operation is greater than 0, the remainder must be

A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 5
E. 6

Because division by 12 yields a remainder of 0, we see that the number of people in the office is a multiple of 12. We can multiply a few multiples of 12 by 3/2, and we have:

12 x 3/2 = 18 ---> 18/12 = 1 R 6

24 x 3/2 = 36 ---> 36/12 = 3 R 0

36 x 3/2 = 54 ---> 54/12 = 4 R 6

48 x 3/2 = 72 ---> 72/12 = 6 R 0

We see that when we divide those results by 12, we get a remainder of either 0 or 6. So, the only possible remainder that is greater than 0 is 6.

Re: When the number of people in an office is divided by 12, the [#permalink]
Given that When the number of people in an office is divided by 12, the remainder is 0. And we need to find the remainder when 3/2 times the number of people in the office is divided by 12

Since the number of people is divisible by 12 (because remainder when divided by 12 is 0)
=> Number of people can be taken as 12k (Where k is an integer)

\(\frac{3}{2}\) of number of people = \(\frac{3}{2}\) * 12k = 18k

Now, 18k when divided by 12 gives a remainder greater than 0
If we take k = 1, we will get 18

18 when divided by 12 gives 6 remainder.

So, Answer will be E
Hope it helps!

But 3 is greater than 0 so how is it a corner case?
