Re: GRE Math Challenge #32-x years old y years from now [#permalink]
How is it E? I got C, by this -

Y = Yann's age now.
After y years, Yann is x => Y + y = x
z years ago, Yann's age was Y - z.

Y + y = x
Y = x - y
=> Y - z = x - y - z

I got C, whats the answer?

C=current age

X = age Y years from now

X = C + Y
C= X-Y
C-Z=age z years ago=X-Y-Z

the answer is C. let yann's current age be a, then his age y years from now will be x, i.e., x=a+y or a=x-y. His age z years ago was a-z, substitute value of a in 2nd expression, z years ago his age was --> x-y-z

It's not difficult, but the trick in this questions is this: find the NOW!
Now+y=x, so Now=x-y
And z years ago will be x-y-z :D

A. x + y + z
B. x + y + z
C. x – y –z
D. y – x –z
E. z - y –x

Hi Sandy, kindly assist to review this. The answer should be C and not E. If it is indeed E, provide a solution that illustrates this. Thanks

Hi @Emike56,

Yes, (C) is the right answer.

I think the answer should be C too. The explanations given before seems accurate.
