For question 2, I found the reasoning in the answer above to be very hard to follow. So I am writing my explanation to help other people who may struggle such as me.
First, be very careful with the particular wording that they are using. They are saying "the number of female general surgery physicians in the under-35 category represented 3.5 percent of all the general surgery physician." The way that is represented is as follows:
x / 37000 = .035
x = 1295 women
Now, let's find the number of general surgery physicians under 35. The way we do that is we take a look at the bottom and second graph concurrently.
The total number of general surgery physicians from the top graph is 37,000. Now using the bottom graph, we have that 30% of them are under 35.
We use .3(37,000) = 11,000
Next, let's find the number of general surgery physicians under 35,
# of general surgery physicians under 35 = .3(37,000) = 11,000
Now, note that
# of general surgery physicians under 35 = # of general surgery physicians under 35 that are male + # of general surgery physicians under 35 that are female
11,000 = # males + 1295
So #male that are general surgery physicians under 35 = 9805
