Thank you

So this means that when we are talking about salaries we have to assume that they are positive? There is no chance they are zero? It seems a bit vague without any explicit assumption

A salary is necessarily positive in its quantification. Has no sense a salary zero. It is not salary, it is charity. :wink:

logic behind this type of question:
S is a large number.
T is a small number.
a large number of x% is always larger than x% of a small number.
Therefore, S*x% > T*x%, T+T*X%<S

correct: B
T = S - 0.1 * S = 0.9 * S
W = T + 0.1 * T = 1.1 * T

In this kind of questions, we should write all the relations among our data and then write all the wanted variables based on one parameter in order to simply compare them.
S and W are wanted.
S = 10/9 * T
W = 11/10 * T
W is a little bit bigger than S. So B is bigger.

Salary S reduced by 10% = salary T

Salary T increased by 10% = salary w

Quantity A
Quantity B
Salary S
Salary W

A) Quantity A is greater.
B) Quantity B is greater.
C) The two quantities are equal.
D) The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

In these type of question it's wise to make equactions like below:- so that one does not make an error in judgement.

Equation 1--- 0.90*S_Salary= T_Salary.
Equation 2----T_salary=.90*S_Salary X1.10T_salary =0.99(of W salary)

Therfore If we consider 10000 salary of S= 0.90 * 10000 =9000
however 0.99 of W salary will be greater than 0.90 hence answer is B.

S is the original salary therefore it is = 100

S=100

Then it is decreased by 10% >>>> S=0.90 = T

T = 0.90

Salary T is increased by 10 % so T=0.90 + 10% = 0.99 and T is = w

W= 0.99

To recap

S=100
T=0.90
W=0.99

The question is : which is greater S or W

S>w

100>0.99

A is the definitive answer

When solving these types of problems it's always best to use test values to avoid silly mistakes.

Let S = 100. 10% of 100 is 10, so T = 90. 10% of 90 is 9, so W = 99 (approximately). Repeat this exercise with any value of S and W will always be approx. 99% of S.

Thus S is greater and the correct answer is A.

most straightforward way I can explain is

.9S = t which means S = t/.9

W = 1.1t

Choose any positive number (because salary is positive) as t to highlight the relationship. If t = 100

S = 111.11...
W= 110

S > W
