Statement of Purpose
Flight is the phenomenon which still dazzles me whenever I see anything fly .To fly we have to outwit Mother Nature in her own environment. The more I think about it the more I get involved in it. This was the thought that sowed seeds of my love towards the field of Aerospace Science. I am applying for M.S in Aerospace Engineering and have plans for pursuing a Doctoral Research and dedicate my whole life for my love of research.
During my high school Mathematics and Science were the subjects which always fascinated me towards them. I was more inclined towards Mathematics because it was more practical and I love calculations which are one of the reasons I play Chess too. These were the beginning of my love and interest in the field of pure research.
I completed my Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Hasmukh Goswami College of Engineering in 2013 with a CGPA 0f 8.05(Distinction) as I was interested in working of each and every machine around me. Single-minded devotion, to verse myself properly on the finer aspects of research, and stand on the cutting edge of technology, has been the crux of my decision to go forth with my higher studies in this field. During first year of my course I learned Advanced Mathematics and Physics which revised my concepts of high school. I also had a tough time in solving my Engineering Graphics paper. I was really shattered when I didn’t clear it in my first attempt. My parents and tutors helped me emotionally to get back to senses and work hard after which later I cleared the paper. The first year also brought a delight to be in the extra curricular section as I defeated the reigning Chess Champion of the College in the College Level Chess Championship.
My second year favorite’s subjects included Material Science and Metallurgy which taught me about different properties and behavior of metals, manufacturing process-1 which kept me abreast of various methods used to process metals according to its desired application. Due to my flair for research subjects like Fluid Mechanics attracted me as it contained the concept about flows and motions in fluid which was connected to my love of Aerodynamics.
In the third year of my undergraduate program, I acquired a consummate knowledge about the working and processes in Internal Combustion Engines by the experiments conducted in our college Laboratory equipped with latest equipments. Of great interest to me was the working of Wankel Rotary combustion Engine. I found the concept of rotary combustion engine to be of the greatest interest to me. For my 7th semester Industry Defined Project I took many concepts from the subject Heat and Mass Transfer. I along with my team solved the Heating problem that the company Prism Textile Machineries Private Limited was facing in their Braking System of Long Chain Beamer Machines which is commonly used machine in textile industries. We based upon our study and observations calculated the amount of heat generated in a particular type of Metal used as a Disc plate and suggested a replacement for that metal with the one having better heat exchange properties. I also developed some programming skills in the subject Visual Basic .Moreover Visual Basic developed my programming skills as a programmer as I created some of my own programs as a part of my college assignment.
Not only academically third year was also good for my performance in other fields. I got to represent college in a National Level Robo-Wars Competition at Techfest 2012 conducted by IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), Bombay. While preparing for this Competition I gained not only much new knowledge and experience but also confidence that devoting myself to Science was the right decision.
In Final year I came across many interesting concepts like Thermal Engineering, Automobile Engineering, and Jet Propulsion Systems. There were two subjects in which again I found my link to Aerospace, Operation research and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. Operation Research is a very broad subject and it covers almost every manufacturing process. My inclination towards Mathematics was a great help in learning the subject as I had to develop many mathematical models for different process using Linear programming methods. I also came to know about the statistical methods of forecasting, methods of Optimization like the Simplex method. I also loved the topic of Game theory and Probability since I am also a chess player it really helped me to make educated moves in my practical Chess games too, that way I integrated my hobbies with my studies. Moreover Visual Basic developed my programming skills as a programmer as I created some of my own programs as my college assignment.
As a part of my last semester Industry Defined Project at PWS Engineers Private Limited, Anand me and my team did a project on Balancing of the ejection rod of IC-4P Ice Cream Cup packaging Machines under the guidance of Mr. Rohit S Panchal the Director of the establishment. The project thesis explained various problems that caused due to misalignment of ejection rods, Lack of Parallelism between base plate and Main Hexagonal plate, leakage of Lubricants from the cylinder. I got a chance to understand the true meaning of research, and the experience the excitement associated with it. Our findings were summarized in Project Paper titled “Synchronization of IC-4P Ice-Cream Cup Packaging Machine”. During a period of 20 days my team was able to solve most of the operational difficulties which increased their production. These activities give me valuable experience as well as satisfaction of hard work.
I also enjoy writing, I wrote articles as a contributor for the websites
www.roostergnn.com and
www.gapbrave.com which on topics like Chess, Culture and Archeology which helped me to broaden my knowledge horizon in different fields. I appeared for the written examination for Indian Air force called AFCAT (Air force Common Admission Test) for year 2013 and was shortlisted for SSB (Service Selection Board) interview. Later in the year I also got shortlisted for an interview for the post of Junior Research Fellow at DRDO, Pune.
In this era of technological revolutions, United States/Canada has been a leader in pioneering work in the evolution of technology with the industry giants and I hope to get benefit from this great endeavor. My decision to pursue post graduate studies at your university is a result of lengthy discussions with my faculty and family members. Browsing through the information brochure and the University's home page, I feel that the post graduate study here holds a lot of promise to me. The breadth and depth of the courses coupled with a stimulating research environment seem to me the right mix for seminal work and pioneering research. After my master’s I also have plans for my Doctoral research and dedicate my life to pure research.
Before winding up I would like to draw your attention to the fact that my academic scores only reflect small part of my abilities. I found existence of a gap between compulsory courses taught in my department and subjects that I found interesting. I took my undergraduate studies as an opportunity of exploring various topics from my interest areas, viz. Fluid Mechanics, Mathematics and Internal Combustion Engines, Visual Basic so that I can carry out commendable work during course of my graduate studies. For same reasons, learning and not publications drove my project selection and experience throughout my undergrads.
Your University has a strong Aerospace division, known for its great facilities, will be the ideal place for me to pursue my post graduate studies. By working under the guidance of accomplished faculty at your department, I am sure I will be able to exploit my potential to the fullest. Interacting with the best minds of the world will be an enriching experience and this will spur me on, to being the very best in my field. I eagerly wait for your benevolent act of accepting me into your fold and granting an admission in Masters in Aerospace Engineering. If selected for pursuing MS at your institute I shall try to use my experiences and passion for further research, and thus will try to contribute significantly towards the existing and futuristic scientific community at the university.
