Explanation

The clue “in turn” leads to the correct answer. Incorrect answers irony and comedy add an idea — humor — that was not indicated by the sentence.

<b>Can you explain how vicissitude is not correct? I thought there was intended irony here — irony unrealized by the speaker talking about the younger generation, but realized by the narrative voice in the sentence, nonetheless. #halp

Because it is completely out of scope here.

the meaning of the sentence is that a generation critics the next one and so forth. In a sort of cicle or repeating pattern

for a circle, the last generation (figuratively) has to say it to the first generation. This cannot happen so its not a circle per se.
