Can someone explain the reasoning behind the answer choice 'didactic'? I believe it has a slight negative connotation.

Hi,

"..Plato’s record of these dialogues that Socrates’s teachings " - Dialogue & teachings are the key terms. Both Didactic & Edifying means instructive. Inspiring is not be right word in this context.

Hope it helps.

The actual meaning of didactic is being instructive with a moral sense to it, in a way educating someone. Although 'inspiring' is a close option, it's actually a beautiful trap, since inspiring doesn't necessarily mean to 'educate' which fits perfect with edifying.
Hope this helps

First make pairs -

Inspiring & rousing (exciting)
Edifying & Didactic (educational)
Tedius & grating (irritating)

Since the sentence is about teaching, the second pair is the answer.
