Re: A university training enables a graduate to see things as th [#permalink]
Option E
Even if you don't know the meaning of Option E; We can straightaway Eliminate Option A & Option B
Reject Option C as Mass is not at all Logical / sensical fit
Reject Option D as Plethora - Excess of anything / Collection of things (Eg - Plethora of Stars were present there ) ; A collection of thought can't be twisted & disentangled.

The question is a bit tricky as "line of thought" is an actual phrase, meaning 'a particular way of thinking characteristic of a certain group;' a twisted 'line of thought' would be akin to a twisted line of logic. Skein is still the better answer.

What exactly is wrong here about "twisted line of thought" meaning -- something like complicated

One would have to disentangle a skein or coiled and twisted bundle of yarn. Note how the presence of the verb disentangle, which may be used both figuratively and literally, influences the writer’s choice of words. In this case, while line is a possible choice, the word does not possess the connotations of twistings and tangled contortions that make skein a more suitable choice.
