Approach #1 (fast)
Given: 3x – 4 = 11
Square each side to get: (3x – 4)² = 11²
Evaluate right side to get: (3x – 4)² = 121
Answer: D
Approach #2 (slow)
Given: 3x – 4 = 11
Add 4 to both sides: 3x = 15
Solve: x = 5
So, (3x – 4)² = [3(5) – 4]²
= (15 - 4)²
= (11)²
= 121
Answer: D
