Romero was 64 and he wrote with such aplomb that everyone believed he wrote with great maturity and ripeness commensurate with his age. But that was a pretension. He was indeed not such a mature person. It was his great achievement (distinction) that he made everyone believe he was mature.

What nobody would think of denying, = what everybody would think of accepting (remove both the negatives and you will get the a positive meaning)
