Vitamins are good at to help our immune system and for our health in general.

However, other substances such as caffeine limit, reduce their potentiality to help us (inhibit) their effects.

Leaving our body and our entire immune system imbalanced (impaired)

I thought 'reduce/weakened' also fits the sentence...
"and other drugs severely reduce their effectiveness, leaving our body's defenses weakened"
Why not?

Maybe because of the word “severely “ , the blank then demands a more strong word , so I guess inhibit seems a better fit than reduce.
I maybe wrong , I’m no expert at verbal
