Your goal is to reach the correct answer using any tool you do have in your arsenal. it does not matter if the percent change is stated or not.

use a flexible approach. you will never go wrong

Quantity A
Quantity B
The percentage loss if 12 pens are purchased individually rather than purchasing the entire pack of 12
16.67%

Quantity A is greater
Quantity B is greater
The two quantities are equal
The relationship cannot be determined from the information given

Show: ::
I got 14.2% (i.e(12/84)*100) as the percentage loss but the ans is ((12/72)*100).Should we not calculate Percentage loss for cost price 84?

If the ans is c the option for A should mention that the percentage be rounded off to 2 decimal place else option B would be correct. Therefore when practicing use material from reliable source

You had a doubt on what should be the base in calculating the %..

Now, we know that the Loss and profit both are on cost price but here both are COST prices..
But we are looking for loss%, so initial amount of 72$ for 12 will become earlier purchase...
so ans is 100*(7-6)/6 = 100/6=16.67%

But as mentioned above it should be clear that the % is being rounded of to HUNDREDTH place and it does leave some ambiguity on what to take base

What is the source?

I calculated that answer to be B.

Percent Loss = Percent Decrease = \(\frac{Difference}{Larger Number}\)*100

It should be \(\frac{84-72}{84}*100 = 14.29\)%

14.29% < 16.67%

Answer B
