Take the task of creating a meal and break it into stages.
Stage 1: Select a main course There are 3 items to choose from, so we can complete stage 1 in 3 ways
Stage 2: Select 2 side dishes Since the order in which we select the side dishes does not matter, we can use combinations. We can select 2 side dishes from 4 side dishes in 4C2 ways (6 ways) So, we can complete stage 2 in 6 ways
Stage 3: Select a dessert There are 2 desserts to choose from, so we can complete stage 3 in 2 ways
By the Fundamental Counting Principle (FCP), we can complete all 6 stages (and thus seat all 6 children) in (3)(6)(2) ways (= 36 ways)
We get: QUANTITY A: 36 QUANTITY B: 36
Answer: C
Note: the FCP can be used to solve the MAJORITY of counting questions on the GRE. So, be sure to learn it.
