Q1: Since the total private donation for child safety in Sept 1989 is a bit more than 9 mln, we should divide \(9^+\) by 38 to get roughly 0.236, which in million is 236,842 that is near to D since the answers are very spread apart. Answer D.
Q2: it's again a matter of estimation. The ratio between homeless and animal rights in September 1985 to December 1989 is computed as 300/230 mln = 1.3. Among the answers, 4/3 = 1.3 thus the answer is C.
Q3: Using the formula of the percent increase, it's easy to check that Child Safety got the highest increase from September 1989 to October 1989. Answer E.

Thank you very much for you and Carcass for all solutions and questions you are presenting here. But regarding question 2 above, why you did not use Starting value - the decreasing value / starting value formula?

First of all this is not A Powerprep software question but from Princeton. The tag was wrong. I guess it was changed when several months ago all the tags of the board were messed up.

Can anyone explain Q3?
So break down the increase in every department Animal Rights- 2.5mil to 3 mil- 20% increase Disaster relief-1.5mil to 2mil- 33% increase Homeless Aid- 3mil to 3.5mil- 16.7% increase Enviornmental protection- 4mil to 4.5mil- 12.5% increase Child Safety- 9.25mil to 10mil- 8% increase
Which means child safety was increased the least, proportinally. Hence answer is E

Why can you simply not "estimate" by looking at the spatial difference between the Sept and Oct 1989 markers? i.e. narrower distance between markers = smaller percentage change?

Also the OA is not D but B.

Carcass, could you please explain why did you not take any value of december 1989? and why only september one? The question mentions that from september 1979(or so) to december 1989.

#1 Question
D
Divide the $9.4 million in private donations received by child safety organizations in September 1989 by the 38 organizations operating at the time. The amount is approximately $250,000.
#2 Question
C
From the line graph, you see that homeless aid groups took in about $300 million in private donations, and animal rights groups about $225 million. The ratio of $300 million to $225 million is 4 to 3.
#3 Question
E
In September 1989, $9.4 million was privately donated to child safety, and in October 1989, $9.9 million was privately donated. Percent change is \(\frac{change}{original }* 100 \) The change is equal to 9.9 – 9.4 = 0.5 (the difference between private donations in September 1989 and October 1989). The original is equal to 9.4 (the amount of private donations in September 1989). The percent change is \(\frac{0.5}{9.4} * 100\) or approximately 5 percent. This is lower than the percent change in any of the other categories.

Carcass, in the 2nd question its written from september 1985 to december 1989. I got confused with that. so why did you only take values for september 1985?
