Using Pythagoras theorem,
For the right-angled triangle that contains x
=> \(5^2 = (\sqrt{13})^2 + x^2\)
=> => \(x^2 = 5^2 - 13\)
=> \(x = \sqrt{12}\)
For the right-angled triangle that contains y
=> \(5^2 = (\sqrt{11})^2 + y^2\)
=> => \(y^2 = 5^2 - 11\)
=> \(y = \sqrt{14}\)
Hence y is greater than x
For the right-angled triangle that contains x
=> \(5^2 = (\sqrt{13})^2 + x^2\)
=> => \(x^2 = 5^2 - 13\)
=> \(x = \sqrt{12}\)
For the right-angled triangle that contains y
=> \(5^2 = (\sqrt{11})^2 + y^2\)
=> => \(y^2 = 5^2 - 11\)
=> \(y = \sqrt{14}\)
Hence y is greater than x
