I am a huge fan of you Scott.

However, I have to disagree with you about memorizing 2000/3000 vocabulary words. Or even more. For me is a waste of time.

The real problem that the students are stubborn to catch is that if your level of standard English is really good and I mean really good it is in the upper-level range of mastering the language, then even if you do not know all those words you can smash the question either way.

The other way around is also NOT true. You can really know 2000 words but if you are not able to grasp the real essence of the question, then those words are sterile.

Hi Carcass,

First off, thank you for the compliment!

Now, regarding your take on vocab, while I understand what you’re saying, I still believe that regardless of your handle on the English language, having a firm grasp of MANY vocab words will allow you to more swiftly and efficiently get through any Text Completion or Sentence Equivalence problem. That being said, as I mentioned, after improving vocab, students need to improve their skills at answering Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence questions. Thus, I’m not saying to memorize a bunch of vocab and call it a day. Rather, I’m saying that along with memorizing a lot of words, students must work on their skills at answering the GRE verbal questions in which those vocab words are presented.

But, the beauty of this forum is that we can all contribute different approaches that will help students, and I greatly appreciate your contributions to this forum as well, my friend.

On point Sir what you expressed.

I totally agree. :)

Of course, vocabulary is a key element in GRE preparation; knowing a lot of words and their meaning in CONTEXT is a grenade in your arsenal.

Thanks
