Quote:
(A, D) If few plants can grow under the canopy of the sycamore tree, the sycamore must be doing something to inhibit or suppress the growth of other plants. In fact, sycamore leaves and pods produce a natural herbicide, a substance that is toxic to plants.

Few other plants can grow beneath the canopy of the sycamore tree, whose leaves and pods produce a natural herbicide that leaches into the surrounding soil,

Under this specific species of tree other plants cannot grow up because the same plant releases a substance that kills other plants

________ = preventing, inhibits, suppressing, avoiding, blocking, stopping

other plants that might compete for water and nutrients.

other plants to have water or other nutrient elements. ONLY and SOLELY The main tree can have or absorb.

I hope now is more clear

Shouldn't the que then start from 'Only a few plants can grow....'
Rather it starts with 'Few other plants can grow ....' which could mean differently

The sentence is perfectly fine

If you say ONLY at the very beginning you imply that a specific type and number of plant grow beneath

If you start with : few other plant you imply that beneath we do not know the exact number and species: could be two or five
