Re: Square QRST has perimeter p. [#permalink]

Seeing we have a 45 degree, 45 degree, 90 degree isosceles we can apply the rule 1,1,Squareroot2.
Hence the sides of the square would be squareroot2-->leading to a perimeter of 4*squareroot2.
quantity A would give us-->1^2+1^2=2 quantity B would give us--->(4squareroot2)^2/16=2

As the perimeter is p and since it is a square, each side would be (1/4)p

Since (1/4)p is the side that opposes the the 90 degree angle, then

((1/4)p)^2 = p^2/16

x^2 + y^2 = p^2/16

Answer choice C

Correct answer choice is c:
We know that in a right angle triangle with sides x,y and ST,

ST^2 = x^2 + y^2
=> ST = √ (x^2 + y^2)

Perimeter of square, p = 4 * √ (x^2 + y^2)
=> p^2 = 16 * (x^2 + y^2)
=> p^2/16 = (x^2 + y^2)

x^2 + y^2 = 1/4p
root of p^2/16 = p/4 = 1/4p
1/4p = 1/4 p
Correct answer: C. The two quantities are equal
