In the figure, the horizontal and vertical lines divide the square ABCD into 16 equal squares as shown. What is the area of the shaded region?
(A) 4
(B) 4.5

We can see that there are 5 triangles surrounding the shaded region. Knowing that the area of the whole square is 4*4=16, we can now see that the area of the bottom triangle(s) are 1/2*3*2(notice that this is true because in one the base is less than 3 and vice versa in the other one). This equals 3*2=6. We have 16-6=10 now. The two vertically opposite ∆'s at the top each have an area of 1/2*1*2=1 so both have an area of 1*2=2. So 10–2=8 and the top most ∆ has an area of 1/2*4*1/2=1. Therefore our shaded area is 8–1=7.
