50% of x = y + 20
1/2 ( x) = y + 20
x = 2y + 40
x - 2y = 40.
B is the correct answer.

One possible approach is to find values of x and y that satisfy the given information: 50% of x equals the sum of y and 20.
One pair of values is as follows: 50% of 100 equals the sum of 30 and 20.
