Take the task of choosing what to eat and break it into stages.
Stage 1: Select a sandwich Since there are 5 choices of sandwich to choose from, we can complete stage 1 in 5 ways
Stage 2: Select EITHER a salad OR a soup There are 4 choices of salad, and 3 choices of soup (7 options in total) So we can complete stage 2 in 7 ways
By the Fundamental Counting Principle (FCP), we can complete the two stages (and thus create a lunch) in (5)(7) ways (= 35 ways)
Answer: 35
Note: the FCP can be used to solve the MAJORITY of counting questions on the GRE. So, be sure to learn it.
