At the local grocery store, apples normally cost 40 cents each. During a recent sale, the price was reduced to 3 apples for a dollar. How much money would be saved by purchasing 30 apples at the sale price?

C. $2
D. $2.50
E. $3

I figured the savings of the 3rd one by realizing that you save $0.20 when you buy 3 at the sale price and multiplying the $0.20 by 10 to equate to the 30 apples for a total savings of $2. Will that strategy always work or did the numbers just work out well in this case?

REGULAR PRICE
At $0.40 apiece, the cost of 30 apples = (30)($0.40) = $12.00

REDUCED PRICE
At $1.00 per THREE apples, each apple costs $1.00/3
So, the cost of 30 apples = (30)($1.00/3) = $10.00

$12.00 - $10.00 = $2.00

Answer: C
