The maximum speed that a particular truck can travel is 80 mph. Tim drives that truck on a long highway stretch of 280 miles. The first 120 miles stretch of the highway has a speed limit of 60 mph, whereas the rest of the distance speed limit is 90 mph. If Tim always remain within the speed limits and never drops below 40 mph, then which of the following could be the possible time taken by Tim to travel the entire journey?

For the first 120 miles the speed limit is 60 and Tim never drives below 40 mph. Hence for the first stretch the time he takes is between \(\frac{120}{40}\) = 3 hrs to \(\frac{120}{60}\) = 2 hrs.
For the rest of 160 miles he can drive at lowest speed of 40 miles per hr or within the max allowed speed limit of 80 miles per hr. There the time he takes for the second stretch is between \(\frac{160}{40}\) = 4 hrs to \(\frac{160}{80}\) = 2 hrs.
Hence he should take the total time to complete the journey between 4 to 7 hrs. Only option B,C and D satisfies the condition.
For the rest of 160 miles he can drive at lowest speed of 40 miles per hr or within the max allowed speed limit of 80 miles per hr. There the time he takes for the second stretch is between \(\frac{160}{40}\) = 4 hrs to \(\frac{160}{80}\) = 2 hrs.

Max time in which he can reach (When speed in the lowest possible @ 40) = 280/40=7 hrs
Min time in which he can reach (When speed in the lowest possible @ 60 for 120 and 80 for 160)=2 hrs+ 2 hrs = 4 hrs
So all combinations in between is possible
