There was a series of two successive discounts of x% on the price of a shirt. The final price of the shirt was tagged at 36% of the original price. What is the value of x?

b) 33%

Not a good question.
At least the question should mention the fact that the two % changes in a row are equal.
Since we are talking of two successive discounts of x%, \(\frac{x}{100} * \frac{x}{100} * 1 = 0.36\)
Since we need the value of x, \(\frac{x^2}{10000} = 0.36\) -> \(x^2 = 3600\) -> \(x = \sqrt{3600} = 60\)
However, 60 is not among the answer choices. Are you sure they are correct ??
Moreover, follow the rules to post on the board. The question must be posted under the problem solving sub-forum NOT in the GRE Expert section.
