When the stock market or in general the market is going to plunge everybody is freaking out. So the mood reflects this state of mind.

Can not go upward. However, as for the question, the mood was in contrast ( incongruous.) which means the stock traders were happy.

Mah, what a weird question

but how do we know whether it plunged drastically upwards or downwards, so as to know the mood of the news ?

'Plunge' means a downward direction, not upward. The sentence then states that the mood is incongruous i.e. the mood does not match the what happened. So, buoyant and sanguine are the only options that fit the blank.

The stock market having plunged drastically, the investor’s _______ mood on the trading floor seemed incongruous.

The stock market went down but the mood seems incongruous --> Mood is not so bad

A,C,E are out as these options indicate the mood is totally bad.
Remaining BDF

B --> Sanguine --> calm --> good option
D Sardonic = humorous

Hence BF is the Answer.
