The New Gotham Department of Transit is taking an inventory of its vehicles. There are three times as many buses as train cars. 20
percent of the buses are powered by alternative fuels, of which 40 percent are powered by biofuels, 20 percent by hydrogen, and the
remainder by natural gas. 25 percent of train cars are less than 5 years old, which is half the rate for natural gas buses. What
percentage of New Gotham’s vehicles are natural gas buses that are at least 5 years old?
Let there be 400 vehicles in all
It is apparent that there are only buses and train cars, three times as many buses as train cars
=> Number of buses = 3/4 * 400 = 300 and number of train cars = 100
Buses running on alternative fuels = 20% of 300 = 60
Buses running on biofuels = 40% of 60
Buses running on hydrogen = 20% of 60
Buses running on natural gas = Remaining 40% of 60 = 24
25 percent of train cars are less than 5 years old, this is half the rate for natural gas buses
=> 50% of natural buses are less than 5 yrs old => Number of such buses running on natural gas = 50% of 24 = 12
=> Number of buses running on natural gas which are at least 5 yrs old = 24 - 12 = 12
=> Percentage of New Gotham’s vehicles are natural gas buses that are at least 5 years old = 12/400 x 100 =
3%
