It depends on the question. It can be |Y - X|, depends on the question. This can be a productive conversation if you have particular Questions as examples.

"The differences of X & Y is 4" means that "The differences of 10 & 6 is 4" for example.

You need to assume scenario 1.

Yes, it will be great if you can give some examples because I highly doubt that GRE will have a question just with that sentence. They will be providing more infor for a question like this.

One of the examples I found was in Barrons book. " If a is equal to the sum of b and c, which of the following is equal to the difference of b and c? A. a-b-c B. a-b+c C. a-c D. a-2c E. a-b-2c" The answer considers it to be b-c and not vice versa.

Hey kruttikaaggarwal,

Refer page no: 17 of "Math Conventions" released by ETS (Testmaker of GRE)

It says:

"Unless otherwise indicated the phrase "difference between two quantities" is assumed to mean positive difference", that is greater quantity minus lesser quantity.

You can get the pdf here: https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_math_conventions.pdf

Hope this helps :)
