Children are brilliant at learning new languages of all sorts. Their neurons are practically liquid, pouring across local loci and making new synapses (i)____. As we age, however, the cells settle into place, maybe invest in a sofa and china cabinet, and the entire neuronal matrix, slowly but unmistakably, starts to (ii)____. By our late twenties or early thirties, the mind is (iii)____: it has taken a stand on life, it knows from whence it speaks, and that commitment is reflected in its structure.

1. The first blank can be filled discretely. "liquid" suggests that the first blank can be "with little effort". Painstakingly is clear off the block as it is opposite and "with clear objectives" cannot be right as per the sentence as it would be more relevant for a matured life
2. The second blank following the first can easily distil the answers to "harden" as it says it "starts to". From liquid state it starts to harden - will be logical
3. The final blank should explain "it has taken a stand on life, it knows from whence it speaks" - "made up" is the only possible answer for this. "Transformed" could be a contender but "made up" is more apt to take a stand on life.
