Para 1- Marie Antoinette suffered harshest criticisms; 2 factors
Para 2- Reason 1; increase in literacy, output of publications, decrease in royal censorship, coffeehouse culture
Para 3- Diamond Necklace Affair- a juicy affair
Para 4- scam revealed; The queen was furious and had Rohan arrested and marched off to the Bastille; later rohan aquitted
Para 5- consequences for MA severe; as this hatred of the queen began to boil over, it became inevitable that it would spill onto the monarchy itself.

1. The second paragraph of the passage serves to
(A) elucidate further the mechanisms by which disdain for a public figure grew- Correct

2. The passage implies that a significant proportion of the French aristocracy
(A) was jealous of the queen’s riches- incorrect, can't infer this
(B) read coffee house pamphlets- incorrect, maybe but this need not be true
(C) proved more loyal to Rohan than to the queen- Correct
(D) were less literate than the general populace- incorrect, no comparative statement is made
(E) became leaders of the Revolution- incorrect, no revolution is discussed

The queen was furious and had Rohan arrested and marched off to the Bastille. Yet, in addition to the countless aristocrats who sued to the king on Rohan’s behalf, at one point over 10,000 people came to the doors of the Bastille demanding Rohan’s release. He was eventually acquitted, much to the queen’s dismay.

3. According to the passage, readership of books and pamphlets increased in the late 18th century because
(A) the education of women nearly doubled the number of readers- incorrect, we know that literacy rose but do not have specific details of women education
(B) the literacy rate tripled during the reign of Louis XV- incorrect, annual output of printed publications tripled by the end of Louis XV’s reign
(C) there were more exciting scandals to write about than there had been in previous times- incorrect
(D) government censorship had relaxed- Correct, Royal censorship had also been greatly reduced by this time ; I was a little unsure since the passage talks about royal censorship and option D talks about government sponsorship, but this is the best answer
(E) the number of coffee houses increased - incorrect,
Also, coffeehouse culture and print culture collided during the mid-to-late 1700s --> we have no idea whether the number of coffee houses increased
