Roman historians who study the period 30 B.C. to A.D. 180 can (i) _______ the "Augustan peace" only by failing to recognize that this peace in many respects resembled that of death.

The historians can do something about the "Augustan Peace" only by failing to recognize that this peace resembled death.

If they recognized this "Augustan Peace" to be resembling death, then they would most likely denounce it.

Since they failed to recognize this, they can only praise it. Therefore the correct choice word is applaud.
