After winning the lottery, John bought sports cars, built a mansion, and wore designer suit; however, by thus (i) _____ his (i) _____, he alienated his friends.
We (are lucky to) witness multiple events in John's life:
1. winning the lottery
2. buying sports cars, building a mansion & wearing designer suits
3. alienated his friends
Using the keyword "after" there is sequence established i.e. 1 -> 2; and resulting in event 3 as a consequence.
We can quickly relate money as the connecting factor, thus indicating:
John won the lottery, and as a result he won a lot of money. With the intention to boast this, he went on to buy luxurious items, however his pretentious (boastful) nature distanced many of his friends.
Blank (i): we are looking for a word similar to boasting (vanity, vaunting, pretentious nature etc)- only "flaunting" makes sense. "enduring" & "calculating" are clearly out of scope, as there is no support from the context
Blank (ii): this should indicate money, wealth (opulence etc) - only "prosperity" makes sense
